We’ve moved… to a new website!

newpage
So we’ve moved!

Still the same http://southjerseytrails.org/, but now that link will take you to our new, fancy page!  Still some bugs being worked out in the new page (fixing them is going slow… you know, new baby), but should offer a new and improved experience!

State Parks Closed!? Beautiful alternatives for hiking in South Jersey!

So New Jersey has shut down its state parks until… well, we don’t know when (see the full list of closures ).  My only comment about this is “Ladies and gentlemen, your state government at work!”  And we’ll leave it at that.

The good news?  County, local, and private parks to the rescue!  Below is a sampling of parks and trails that are open for business as usual (note that this list is not definitive, just some of my favorites).  So shake your fists collectively in anger toward Trenton, then work out that anger by going for a beautiful hike this weekend anyway!

Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge

In the Junior Ranger Sarah Blog (Sarah Hullihen For President 2044! She has my vote already), Sarah and her friend Buddy Bison check out a lot of great places in South Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Some are nature, some are history, all are great!

Well worth checking out.

This weekend I got to visit Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in southern New Jersey.  This refuge is a great place to visit to see birds and other wildlife. Many birds stop here in the fall and spring during migrations.  It is actually part of what is called the “Atlantic Flyway.”

One of the things you can do at this refuge is drive on the 8 mile Wildlife Drive. This road takes you around part of the refuge and through some of the different habitats. You can see a lot of wildlife right from your car. There are also hiking trails through different parts of the refuge.

On my visit I learned a lot about how the refuge manages wildlife. There is a lot of information on the different signs that tells you about how they make habitats for different birds. While you are here you might see a…

We’re in the Philadelphia Inquirer today!

mikeinwoods

So, a certain South Jersey hiking blog was written about on the front page of the South Jersey section of the Philadelphia Inquirer today.

“South Jersey man’s hiking blog has half million fans, and climbing”
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/new_jersey/south-jersey-mans-hiking-blog-has-half-million-fans-and-climbing-20170611.html

Big thank you to Kevin Riordan for taking interest in our little blog here, and for writing such a nice article about it!  Big thank you to Kevin and Elizabeth (who managed to get nice pictures of me) for schlepping two miles through the woods with me last Thursday, and then still have nice things things to say!

And, of course, thank you to everyone who comes to read what I have to say about the dirt paths through the woods, meadows, marshes, and swamps of the greatest state in the Union, South Jersey.
